James Jakes Asks Media To Back Off

Jakes is racing's Gagnam Style, gaining fame overnight like no one has ever seen.

Rahal Leterman Langian HQ, Hillian, Ohio - Indycar driver James Jakes has asked the media and fans everywhere to "give him some space" and also to "back off" following his recent rise to stardom in 2013. Jakes, driver for Rahal Letterman Langian Racing, says he is mobbed wherever he goes, and "can't take a piss without being bothered."

Some of the stardom has to do with Jakes's new commercial that he starred in for his title sponsor, Acorn Stairlifts. This single commercial launched a media frenzy, with many people investing interest in the 26 year native of Great Britain certainly has gained a celebrity status across the pond. "I'm not too sure if it all happened in one day or what have you, but it really has been a roller coaster ride." Other factors may include his rugged looks and his great personality. The answer to the question may remain unknown.

Jakes gets a lot of love and support from fans despite not being the best driver on track. He has been consistently finished in the middle of the pack at every race outside of one podium this year. But his results aside, Jakes dominates the headlines, and he has to adjust to this new life.

How do other drivers react to Jakes's fame? Teammate Graham Rahal, who is currently a mere one place ahead of him in the championship, said it didn't bother him. "Yeah, (Jakes) has become really popular over the last couple of weeks, but I don't let it bother me. My job is to go out and win races, and that's what I plan on doing."

Will Jakes be able to turn all of this fandom and celebrity status into results? Or will he crumble under the immense pressure? Time will tell.
